My Family Showed Support at Vigil for Gun Violence Victims

On Monday, January 20, 2014, the Powerhouse Family traveled to Richmond, VA, with Cathy Rainey and her organization People Helping Our Youth Everyday, Inc. for the 21st Annual Vigil & Advocacy Day. The purpose of this trip to the State Capitol was to come together to remember those Virginians who have lost their lives to gun violence (whether by homicide, suicide or accidental) within the last 12 months. It was put on by The Virginia Center for Public Safety.

Groups from all over the nation came out as we also celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated on April 4, 1968. We heard from key officials, clergy who offered prayers and youth who recited words of hope and healing once spoken by MLK. We even held up cut-out hearts to represent those who were no longer with us.

Afterwards, we were led to the General Assembly Building to speak with legislators with regards to what they can do to bring about better background checks for those try to purchase guns. The children and I had the privilege of speaking with House of Delegate Member Daun Sessoms Hester, who is not only my sorority sister but who I also grew up under in leadership at my childhood church Mt. Gildead.

We got home a little after 8 pm. It was a day well spent. My children and I were truly impacted by what we experienced. It was stated that this was the largest turnout thus far, which also included the most youth to participate in the vigil. We'll be attending next year's vigil.

Please speak out against gun violence as it affects not only the families of the victims, but the communities and our world as well. Get in touch with your legislators and tell them that you want tougher background checks on gun purchases. Guns left in the wrong hands can be a deadly situation.

My Radio Interview with The Hot Morning Show Rocked!

Feona with Adrain, Kim, me and B Long
My interview with the crew of The Hot Morning Show on WNSB Hot 91.1 FM (www.hot91online.com) was absolutely awesome. I was especially proud to be in the studio because the station sits on the campus of my beloved alma mater Norfolk State University. B Long, Kim Fields and Adrain asked some very engaging questions which made for a meaningful and powerful conversation.

I talked about my passion for empowering today's youth, my dedication to building up my community and the mission I'm on to help my fellow single moms through Solo Mommy Magaizne. Additionally, I shared the reasons why I am raising entreprenerial-focused children (FYI: Clara is the Founder & Artistic Director of My Budding Picasso Art and Timothy is the Owner of PositiviTEES by Timothy).

They invited me to come on the show anytime I wanted. I will certainly be back to give more more positive news. I have to send a special THANK YOU to Inez Kelly, my editor at Diva Life Magazine (www.divalifemagazine.com). She scheduled this interview for me so I could tell my story.

Here's a Toast to a Healthy Heart!

I encourage you to exercise daily, incorporate a well-balance diet, go to your annual doctor's visit (and if something doesn't feel right at any given time get checked out), laugh a lot and stress less, develop positive relationships and educate others about heart disease.

Attending KMK Productions' "Power Women's Brunch" in Chesapeake, VA, has really got me thinking. We all know someone who has been affected by heart disease whether it's a family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor or you. We were present to gain more insight on the effects of heart disease among African-American women and to support the American Heart Association's "Go Red" initiative. Did you know that it is the NUMBER 1 cause of death among African-American women.

I had the esteemed pleasure of meeting Miss Gabrielle "Bri" Pinkney at the event. The 11 year old is a Heart Ambassador for the American Heart Association in which  travels around the country to speak about heart disease and heart defects. She delivered a powerful and thoughtful message to the packed room of women all dolled up in red ensembles.

Let us be proactive in our health and practice preventive measures. I want to be around to see my children's children grow. How about you?! Thanks for the invitation Kim Wimish!
