It’s so easy for so many people to say, “Oh, I’m keeping it real”, when in reality they are doing everything but that. They walk around pretending that they have a lot of money when in actuality they are beyond broke. They front like they have it going, when the truth is they are busted and disgusted. They are perpetrating a fraud to the fullest. But why? To feel important? The more that they lie about who they are, what they do and what they have, the more they will believe it and take all measures to obtain what they never really had.

It is so much easier to just keep it real. And what does that mean? It means being truthful first to yourself about who you are and what you are doing and then to others (if need be, after all, you can’t tell your business to everyone because not everyone needs to know; asking for the spirit of discernment has to have its place). Keeping real means owning up to who you are and not pretending to be something that you’re not or not pretending that you have something when you don’t. If you don’t really have the finances to hang out with your friends, don’t spend that money you have put aside for your light bill because you want to act like you’re rolling in money and don’t want your friends to know that your pockets are empty. Keeping it real is saying, “Listen, I can’t go out with you all tonight because I have a previous financial obligation.” You are being honest without putting your business on blast. You will be better respected (if respect is what you’re seeking), if you are truthful.

Keeping it real comes with a lot of responsibility. You won’t always be liked and you have to be okay with that. The consolation prize to keeping it real is that God will honor you for being who you are. In fact, He adores you for who you are.
